Mental illness due to homelessness: a qualitative case study in Melaka, Malaysia

Background: Extreme poverty can result in people barely surviving with poor living standards to the extent of on streets, often fear. With limited access healthcare services and a clean environment, they are more vulnerable life adversities. Highly stressful conditions like these cause mental illnesses such as depressive disorders, anxiety psychological distress, others. Purpose: This research aimed investigate factors that led development illness among homeless under extreme poverty. Design/methodology/approach: This was qualitative case study involved face-to-face interview key informant at Pertubuhan Kebajikan Villa Harapan Melaka (Villa Harapan). is licensed caretaker centre established by Department Welfare, provides shelter illness. Findings: Homeless suffered from disturbances due loss jobs, lack income, broken families, separation their children, other vulnerabilities. They not getting appropriate care attention for problem sickness. Non-supportive family, poverty, chronic stress were main residents. Research limitations: The focused dispossessed who brought Welfare Department. Originality/value: an empirical known Harapan.
